Catherine’s body couldn’t handle ER work anymore, and she needed multiple surgeries over the course of seven years to get better. Then, during an ordinary ER shift, she crashed to the floor while helping a patient from a wheelchair to a gurney. She thrived on being part of a crew that needed to be ready for any and all medical crises that might burst from the doors of an ambulance. She spent more than a decade as an emergency-room nurse. “Romance novels saved my life more than once, and I don’t mean that figuratively,” she says.Ĭatherine grew up and picked a career focused on helping others. As a survivor of child abuse and a teen who “graduated high school by the skin of my teeth,” she found herself looking for ways to escape reality as a coping mechanism. The happily-ever-afters in romances gave her hope during the worst times of her life. Catherine Bybee has just about zero patience for people who criticize romance novels for being an escape from reality.

Penny's characters are fully grown, complex adults and during the course of the series one becomes very attached to them. What I love about the characters is their wholeness - no-one is completely good or nice, no-one is completely awful or spiteful. Obviously Gamache, so fascinating! Ruth Zardo is also compelling. It is much darker and more profound than that. Despite the village setting, however, this is not a 'cosy' crime series.
